Clinical Fellowship in Spine Surgery: National University Hospital Singapore

OOne year long fellowship at Spine division of Department of Orthopedics, National University Hospital, Singapore under Professor Wong Hee Kit, a world-renowned spine surgeon and a member of International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and Chairman of the Spine Section of the Asia Pacific Orthopedic Association, and a Board Member of the Pacific Asian Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery was a very beneficial experience in terms of sheer quality and quantity. Through this fellowship, he was exposed to the management of an entire range of spinal disorders as well as most advanced spinal surgeries like cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacements, thoracoscopic spinal instrumentation for scoliosis correction, complex occipito-cervical reconstructions, tumor resections and reconstructions. The research work done during this period on thoracoscopic scoliosis corrections won the Young Orthopedic Investigator Award by Singapore Orthopedic Association.

Macnab La Rocca Fellowship

Macnab La Rocca Fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St.Lukes Medical Center, Chicago Illinois under the guidance of Prof. Raghu Natrajan and Prof. Gunnar Anderson was an excellent experience working with the world leaders in spine surgery. Along with the huge clinical exposure, this fellowship also gave an excellent opportunity to do basic science research with finite element models. This fellowship was funded by the International Society for Study on Lumbar Spine, Canada and Ganga Hospital Coimbatore.

National Board of Examinations accredited Fellowship in Spine Surgery

National Board of Examinations accredited Fellowship in Spine Surgery for a period of 2 years at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore - This prestigious Fellowship is the only one that has been accredited by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. Working under Dr. S. Rajasekaran, a world-renowned spine surgeon and a member of the prestigious International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine, was a very beneficial experience in terms of sheer quality and quantity. Through this Fellowship, he was exposed to the management of entire range of spinal disorders ranging from disc prolapse to cervical myelopathy, spinal tumors, spinal tuberculosis, spinal deformities and craniovertebral junction anomalies as well as the recent advances like computer aided spinal navigation surgery. By successfully completing this fellowship in 2005, he became the first National Board accredited Spine Fellow of Andhra Pradesh. The research work done by him during this period was internationally appreciated and won many International prestigious awards like ISSLS Prize, BritSpine award, ISSLS Sofamor Danek Award and Eurospine open paper Award.

Ganga Hospital - Johnson & Johnson Trauma Fellowship

During this one-year fellowship, he worked with Dr. S. Rajasekaran at Ganga Hospital Coimbatore, which gave ample chance to get exposed to all types of complex trauma and advanced trauma care. This fellowship provided him with an excellent opportunity for research in the field of open injuries. This work was presented in many national and international conferences and published as a key article in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

1. Dr. J. Naresb Babu is the first National Board accredited Spine surgeon of the State of Andhra Pradesh, India. The National Board of Examinations, New Delhi started the post-doctoral fellowships in some selected specialties including Spine surgery in 2001. The selection of the candidates is by all India competitive examination and interview is open to orthopedic and neurosurgeons. The successful candidates have to do a residency programme for a period of two years which gives eligibility to sit for the exit exam. By successfully completing the exam in first attempt scoring highest marks in 2005, he became the first NBE qualified spine surgeon of Andhra Pradesh and second in India.

2. Niloufer Chinoy Award 2010 by International Society for Fluoride Research (ISFR). The International Society for Fluoride Research was founded in 1966, at a meeting in Detroit of the American Society for Fluoride Research, to promote the sharing of scientific information on all aspects of inorganic and organic fluorides.

3. International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) International travelling fellowship 2010.

4. Consultant Gold Medal 2010 by Orthopedic Association of South Indian States (OASIS). The topic: Is pediatric Spine more accommodative for spinal cord shortening. Results of cord level pedicle subtraction osteotomy for severe kyphosis in children

5. VT Ingalhalikar Gold Medal 2010 for best paper presentation by Association of Spine Surgeons of India. The topic: Is pediatric Spine more accommodative for spinal cord shortening? Results of cord level pedicle subtraction osteotomy for severe kyphosis in children.

6. Asia Pacific Orthopedic Association (APOA) Spine Training Fellowship-2009 APOA conducts regular spine training fellowships at the centre of excellence in Asia Pacific regions. Through this fellowship, he got trained under Prof. JY Chung, Chonnam National University, and S. Korea for a period of 1 month.

7. AA Mehta Gold Medal by Indian Orthopedic Association 2007 this is the most prestigious medal of the Indian Orthopoaedic Association awarded to the best paper presenter below 40 years of age during the annual conference of Indian Orthopedic Association.

The research work done during this period was internationally appreciated and won many International prestigious awards like ISSLS Prize, BritSpine award, ISSLS Sofamor Danek Award and Euro spine open paper award. Following this, he had advanced spine surgery training at Rush Presbyterian St.Lukes Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois, USA as a part of ISSLS Macnab Larocca Fellowship Award. This fellowship gave him an excellent opportunity to do basic science research with finite element models. Latter Dr. Naresh Babu underwent a yearlong specialization in the minimally invasive spine surgery at National University Hospital Singapore. Through this fellowship he was exposed to the management of entire range of spinal disorders as well as most advanced spinal surgeries like cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacements, thoracoscopic spinal instrumentation for scoliosis correction, complex occipital-cervical reconstructions, tumor resections and reconstructions. The research work done during this period on thoracoscopic scoliosis corrections won him the Young Orthopedic Investigator Award by Singapore Orthopedic Association. Dr. Naresh Babu specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery like micro endoscopic discectomy for lumbar and cervical disc prolapsed, minimally invasive lumbar and cervical spinal fixations and fusions, spinal deformity corrections and complex spinal reconstructions. The research work done by him in this field was well appreciated and he received the Silver Jubilee Orator Award from the Indian Orthopedic Association. The work done by him on spinal deformity correction in children received VT Ingalhalikar Gold Medal by Association of Spine Surgeons of India and Consultant Gold Medal by Orthopedic surgeons Association of South Indian States. Dr. Naresh Babu became the first orthopedic surgeon from Andhra Pradesh to be honored with these awards.
